Parents often ask us if all helmets are the same and why they should come to us. Since we don’t know much about the precise treatment protocols of other clinics, it’s difficult for us to give a definite answer. However, we do know that not all helmets or clinic protocols are the same and suffice to say that we have come across some disappointing cases over the last few years.
When choosing a plagiocephaly clinic, here are some of the questions you should ask yourself about the helmets they provide:
- Is there excessive movement of the helmet? All plagiocephaly helmets should move a little but if it’s slipping down or rotating it’s not a good fit.
- Does it enclose the entire top of the skull? This offers protection and provides structure to help the bones remould into an even, symmetrical formation.
- Is it close to the brow? If the helmet is cut too high, the front bones won’t be enclosed throughout treatment, leaving room for facial asymmetry around the forehead area.
- Is there good rotation control, both laterally and from front to back? Without good control, the helmet will keep slipping forwards or around the head, reducing treatment efficacy and potentially leaving friction sores.
- Is there a chinstrap? If a helmet needs a chinstrap, it’s not a good fit and will rotate and leave sores where it does eventually anchor.
- Do the modified mould and helmet resemble a ‘normal’ head shape? A plagiocephaly helmet should be custom-moulded to the original head shape initially and gradually adjusted to restore it to a more normal, symmetrical form. Otherwise, why bother?
Other qualities to look for when choosing a plagiocephaly clinic
- How many babies has the clinic treated over the years? What’s their track record like? Check the website before booking an appointment or bring these questions up when you speak to your clinician in person.
- How do they measure the success of treatment, and do they provide parents with scans as a verification of treatment success?
- Can other parents vouch for them? Do they have case studies on their website, or can they provide a reference? Checking the clinic’s social media pages is a good way to seek out independent opinion.
- Do they give honest answers about the full cost and likely outcomes of treatment?
- Helmets need to be adjusted every few weeks, so it’s easiest if you can find a plagiocephaly clinic near to where you live.
