We are all sensitive to temperature and as children and adults we can add or remove clothing ourselves with no problems. However, mums have to make these decisions for their little ones and so dressing your little one in the right clothing is extremely important. In most cases, your intuition is most likely to be right – have a little faith in yourself! But it is important to remember that the TiMbandAir should be counted as an extra layer for your baby so it will cause them to be warmer than they would feel without the helmet. This is particularly so at the beginning of treatment as your baby’s body is still adjusting to the extra layer.
How to Assess Your Baby’s Temperature
The key to adjusting your baby’s clothing in response to the TiMbandAir is to check their temperature and gauge how warm they feel. Simply feel your baby’s skin to see if they are a comfortable temperature. If your baby’s toes feel cold, this is an indication that they might need socks adding. If the skin underneath your baby’s clothing feels too warm, take one layer off and leave the arms and legs a little more lightly dressed. Also, if the back of your baby’s neck is too warm or sweaty, dress them in something cooler.
Dressing Across Seasons
An important factor to recognise is that Spring and Autumn are notorious for dramatic changes in temperature. One day can feel wonderfully mild and your baby could do without those extra layers, but the next it could be scarf weather. There’s no one rule for every day of the season, so just be aware of the temperature for that day and plan your baby’s clothes accordingly. Dress your baby in layers that can be added or removed, and don’t forget to keep an eye on their cheeks or feel their skin for indications of how cool or warm they are.
The Effect of the TiMbandAir in Colder Temperatures
As explained in our previous blog post, it’s important not to over-compensate for colder temperatures and cause your baby to overheat. One way that the TiMbandAir may affect how you dress your baby in the cold is the inability to dress them in a hat. Placing a tight-fitting hat over your baby’s TiMbandAir helmet can increase the likelihood of them overheating and so we don’t recommend that you do so. If you’re concerned about your baby’s ears, we suggest putting some earmuffs over them to keep them nice and toasty!
The Effect of the TiMbandAir in Warmer Temperatures
When temperatures start to warm up, it’s extremely important to adjust your baby’s clothing accordingly. Just as during winter, the TiMbandAir functions as an extra layer, so bear this in mind when dressing your little one. It’s better to dress them in layers that you are able to take off if needs be. If you and your baby are outside on a particularly sunny day, keep your little one in the shade as much as possible. Unlike adults, babies have a limited ability to cool down through sweating as they only sweat from 30% of the body. Choose clothing that is nice and breathable, thinking of natural fibres such as cotton or wool to keep your baby at a comfortable temperature.
You needn’t be worried about how to dress your baby with the TiMbandAir. As long as you keep the extra layer of the TiMbandAir in mind whilst dressing them, you will be able to dress your little one comfortably. Regular checks of your baby’s skin will help you to keep tabs on whether they are warm or cool enough! And although it is an extra layer, the TiMbandAir is still a lightweight material that doesn’t produce too much warmth. The top of your baby’s helmet is also open so that your baby’s whole head isn’t being unnecessarily covered.
